According to the U.S. Forest Service's National Woodland Owner Survey, only 4% of private woodland owners currently have a Forestry Management Plan and only 14% have consulted a professional forester before harvesting timber (Butler 2008). 

Consulting Foresters use their knowledge to help woodland owners manage their timber resource by creating a Forest Management Plan.  The plan may recommend removing invasive species,  planting trees, and removal of mature, damaged or diseased trees.  If and when timber is harvested, Consulting Foresters make sure that the proper trees are marked for sale to meet your long-term goals, that a competent logger is chosen to harvest the timber, that a contract is in place to protect you and your land, and that you maximize profit from your timber harvest.
